Your post has me think about what I observed working as a therapist in northeast US versus where I am in Dubai, UAE. On the one hand, I have seen the negative sides of extreme individualism and on the other I have also seen the negative sides of extreme collectivism.

So I appreciate how you mentioned that it matters if there is already a larger culture of mutual giving versus when certain people (such as women and blue collar people) are forced to give to the point of sacrificing themselves while other people can get away with prioritizing themselves at the expense of others.

Thanks for offering your reflection. I appreciate both points you make, that different cultures pull for one or the other, and that within those cultures the expectations of giving disproportionately fall on certain groups. Their giving is not perceived as the gifts that they are.
